Windows Mobile 7: Worth the Wait

Wednesday February 17, 2010

Last year, the mobile phone community had plenty of excuses and delays with regards to the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 operating system. With the many disappointments with WinMo 6.1 and the 6.5 update, it seemed like Microsoft was on a streak to deliver the most underachieving operating systems for this generation of smart phones.

Steve Ballmer and company changed all that last weekend. Sunday saw Steve and his crew taking the stage at Barcelona, Spain where they showcased the features and capabilities of the new Windows Mobile 7 operating system to the Mobile World Congress, and from what we saw, this new OS is a game changer.

Stylized menus, easy access links and intuitive controls bring together an all new experience for smart phone users. By establishing the line between PCs and phones, the controls and usage of the new Windows Mobile is unlike any other platform seen before. Our only comment right now is that if Microsoft really wants to show off Zune, they should start making it available in the UK.

Anyway, back to the OS. Presentation showed how easy it is to customize content and information feeds on your mobile device. The use of tiles replaces widgets in what is Microsoft’s own recipe for controlled data streams. You assign specific contacts to a tile which will give you instant updates on anything new from their network.

The main OS divides phone functions into basic categories; persons will give you a view of your contacts and friends, work delivers SharePoint and OneNote (the rest of the Office has yet to be put in), pictures allows you to instantly tag, upload, share images on social networking sites such as Facebook or assign a specific image to a tile and games gives you access to the new Xbox Live Games service for mobile phones (yes, you can synch it with your existing XBL account).
