Vodafone 150 sub £10 phone outed

Monday February 15, 2010

The Vodafone 150 may not run a multitasking smartphone OS, it may not hop on Wi-Fi, sling files over Bluetooth or even have a colour screen. But this new phone, announced at Mobile World Congress, costs under ten pounds. Can’t say fairer than that, can you?

The Vodafone 150 is aimed at emerging markets where mobile phones are still an expensive luxury. It makes calls, sends text messages and has a green screen, just like any self respecting blower from the lat 90s. But the Vodafone 150 costs just $15 (£9.50) unsubsidised, a rock bottom price that’d make Nokia green eyed with jealousy.

If you fancy going a little bit up market from the Vodafone 150, you can get a Vodafone 250, with a colour screen and FM radio, for just $25 (£15), but we’re not fussy at these prices.

The Vodafone 150 is out in developing countries first, but if it comes out in the UK, we wouldn’t be surprised to find it sold subsidised for even less. Is this the first truly disposable phone?
